Landing a full-time role as a Data Analyst at TecAlliance was a career milestone that I hold close to my heart. Not only was it a testament to my hard work and perseverance, but it was also a breakthrough moment especially in a country where it is uncommon for Black professionals to penetrate the corporate industry. This journey led me to one of my most memorable experiences: representing TecAlliance at the Automechanika Moscow 2021 event.
Entering the Russian Corporate World
Let’s be real, working in Russia as a Black professional comes with its fair share of challenges. The corporate world there is still growing in diversity and finding people who look like me in high-level positions is rare. But that didn’t deter me. Instead, I saw it as an opportunity to challenge norms and prove that talent and determination transcend race.
Getting hired as a Data Analyst for Russia, CIS, and Africa at TecAlliance was no stroke of luck. It was the result of years of relentless effort, upskilling, and an unwavering belief in my abilities. TecAlliance is a data center company that specializes in the automotive aftermarket, a niche field where data-driven insights fuel business decisions. My role came with huge responsibilities, but I was ready to take them head-on.
The Automechanika Moscow 2021 Experience

When I was invited to join my colleagues at the prestigious Automechanika Moscow event in 2021, I was both excited and nervous. Why? Because I knew I would be the only Black person in the entire event space. No pressure, right?
The moment I stepped in, all eyes were on me. At first, I wasn’t sure if I should feel like a celebrity or like I had mistakenly walked into the wrong room. But then I realized something, it wasn’t just curiosity; it was genuine interest. People were drawn to me, and this became an unexpected advantage. My presence alone made our TecAlliance stage stand out.
Initially, I was a bit shy. Being the center of attention wasn’t something I was used to, but as the event progressed, I embraced it. I took on conversations confidently, demonstrated our company’s innovations, and networked with industry professionals who were keen to understand both my role and my journey.
Lessons Learned
- Visibility Matters – Standing out in a crowd isn’t always a bad thing. It gave me the chance to engage with people who otherwise might not have approached our booth.
- Confidence is Key – I quickly learned that I had to own my space. Once I stopped overthinking how different I looked, I started focusing on what I brought to the table.
- Support Systems Make a Difference – My colleagues at TecAlliance were incredibly supportive. They valued my contributions and ensured that I felt like an integral part of the team, not an outsider. That sense of belonging made all the difference.
- Breaking Stereotypes One Step at a Time – The more I engaged with attendees, the more I felt like I was changing perceptions. Representation in spaces like these is crucial, and I was honored to be a part of that change.
Reflections on My Journey
Looking back, I see this experience as a defining moment in my career. It reaffirmed that no matter where you come from or what you look like, expertise and dedication will always open doors. Yes, being the only Black person in a room can be daunting, but it can also be an opportunity to inspire and educate.
Russia’s corporate world may still have a long way to go in terms of diversity, but my journey proves that barriers can be broken. I hope my story encourages others who find themselves in unfamiliar territories to embrace their uniqueness and use it to their advantage.
Would I do it all over again? Absolutely. And next time, I might even wear a brighter suit—just to make sure I really stand out.
To those pushing boundaries in their respective fields—keep going. The world is watching, and your presence makes a difference.
